What is unrewarded genius?

Unrewarded genius is a good idea that is going nowhere because no one has yet turned it into something greater. It's thought without action.

I'm David Schriber. I have been running unrewardedgenius.com since the 2000s, and I've not done a lot with it. It's kind of its own best example of what I mean.

Where the phrase comes from

The phrase appears in a well-known passage widely attributed to Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States:

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

In that passage, unrewarded genius is a warning: brilliance on its own often goes nowhere, so persistence matters more.

How this definition is different

Coolidge's point was that persistence beats genius. David Schriber's definition focuses on the idea itself. Unrewarded genius is the gap between having a good idea and acting on it.

Persistence matters, but so do talent, genius and education. And an idea one person won't pursue can still be put to work by someone who will.

Examples of unrewarded genius

  • A product idea you mention to a friend and never pursue.

  • A clever fix at work that never gets written down or shared.

  • A phrase or concept you come up with that someone else later builds a business on.
